celebs and such

I think people honestly like reading about celebrities and weird news stories. With celebrities, I think that people can look at them and can say wow their problems are really minor in the grand scheme of real life or they can say that happened to me to, its not so bad. It can also be a comfort in that maybe you see someone like Paris Hilton getting into some kind of trouble and you think, man if I had the kind of money and fame she does, I wouldn’t be doing the same kinds of stupid things and it in a way makes you feel even better about yourself. Escape from one’s own reality and drama and to look at other people’s drama and see how everything plays out for them I think is another big reason why people read about celebrities. I also think this is why reality TV has been very successful and a lot of the time stars off of those shows end up becoming celebrities, some for more than 15 minutes.
Weird news stories I feel are a different animal. Reading about strange news stories is actually just kind of interesting. Hearing for example about maybe a snake getting into someone’s toilet is something you don’t hear about everyday, and that adds some extra appeal to it. It also can make you laugh which a lot of the time most news stories won’t do. When reading about some strange news stories also, you kind of think its so out there that it has to be true, you can’t make that kind of thing up.

I agree with you that these kinds of stories offer an escape. The actual news does not usually give us anything to look forward to, and it sometimes helps to read about things that don't actually have an affect on our own lives.

I also agree on the "escape theory". I personally love reading weird news -- you're right that it's a lot more amusing than most types of news.
